A lot of anglers don’t need much of an excuse to get together and talk about fishing.
But here’s a really good reason to start thinking about hitting the water: Lefty Kreh.
And another: Steve Rajeff.
And a third: Kelly Galloup.
All three will be “special celebrity guests” at L.L. Bean’s 23rd annual Spring Fishing Weekend, which will be held Friday through Sunday at the company’s Freeport headquarters.
If you’re not yet a fishing nut, here’s what you ought to know about the three gentlemen I mentioned: Kreh is a legendary fly fisherman. Galloup knows much more about trout than you do. And if you can cast better than Rajeff … well … you’re one of the world’s best.
L.L. Bean has a number of seminars on tap for the weekend; Whether you’re looking for someone to teach you and your kids to fly cast, or want to figure out how to fish for striped bass on light tackle, you’ll find what you’re looking for.
If you want to talk about cane rodmaking, they’ll have you covered (with Kathy Scott and David Van Burgel leading the way). And if you want to check out the newest and best gear from G. Loomis, Shimano, St. Croix, Sage or Scientific Angler, you’ll be able to do so.
In addition, four “fly-tying masters” will be on hand to show you how to do what they do. And none of those four are strangers to fly anglers in the Bangor area, as each has appeared at various Penobscot Fly Fishers shows or classes over the years.
Edward “Muzzy” Muzzeroll, Don Bastian, Dave Klausmeyer and 14-year-old Sam Kenney will each be available to chat about tying, or to show you how to get a little bit better at the craft.

If you’re still on the fence, consider this: I’ve been heading to this show for years, and have learned that this is a pretty good weekend to be in Freeport. Many of the stores traditionally hold epic sales events in the middle of March, and you’re likely to walk away with a lot of great stuff for much less than you’d typically spend.
