High school bass fishing championship set for Bucksport May 9

Avid high school bass anglers will gather in Bucksport on May 9 for the Student Angler Federation Maine high school state championship tournament, according to a recent press release.

The event is being presented by The Bass Federation, in partnership with FLW, and offers high school students the opportunity to qualify for regional championships, and perhaps even a national competition.

The high school state championship tourney will be staged on Silver Lake, and interested anglers must check at 6:30 a.m. at the boat ramp on Silver Lake Road. Interested anglers can learn more and register at HighSchoolFishing.org.

According to the press release from the High School Fishing Federation, the top 10 percent of finishers from each state championship tourney qualify for a conference regional championship. Then, the top 10 percent of regional finishers will move on to the FLW/TBF High School National Championship.

Both anglers on a team — and their “coach,” who provides the boat they’ll use for the day, will check in at Silver Lake at 6:30 a.m. Anglers will launch their boats at 7:30 a.m., and a weigh-in is set for 2:30 p.m. In a rule change this year, a team is allowed to offer one of the two seats in the boat to a 7th or 8th grader.
