14 veterans earn permits for controlled moose hunt

For the third consecutive year, Maine first lady Ann LePage was able to provide disabled veterans with some good news on Thursday: She drew the names of 14 veterans who will take part in this year’s Disabled Veterans Controlled Moose Hunt.

The Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife has conducted a controlled moose hunt in Aroostook County for the five years, counting 2014, in an effort to help regulate the moose population.

The controlled moose hunt focuses effort on areas where there has been substantial crop damage or numerous car-moose crashes.

“I’m so proud to be asked each year to draw the names for the lottery,” LePage said in a press release. “This is a unique opportunity for disabled veterans to participate in a moose hunt and Maine is the only state that offers this type of experience.”

According to the release, 125 veterans applied for the permits this year.

This year’s 14 winners: Armand Frappier of Fairfield, Richard Craig of Eastport, Alfred Thibeault of Harmony, Joseph Aucoin of Topsham, Tommaso Tempesta of Turner, Joseph Frenchette of Fairfield, Norman Boynton of Prospect, Joseph Michaud of St. Francis, Gregory Struck of Reed Plantation, Charles Hamel of Lee, Eugene Cramer of Lee, Robert McQuillan III of Winthrop, Rita Picard of Stockholm and David Morse of Pittston.

Five alternate hunters were also selected: John Craig of Masardis, Homer Clough of Topsfield, David Cox of Baileyville, Bruce Smith of Abbot and Edson Scholz of Vassalboro.
