Weather forces change at U.S. National Toboggan Championships

When a toboggan race is postponed due to snow, you know you might have a pretty hefty winter storm on the way.

And that’s the case this morning: Officials of the U.S. National Toboggan Championships, with racing originally scheduled to begin on Saturday, announced minutes ago that Saturday is a no-go. Instead, all racing will be condensed into a one-day package and staged on Sunday.

“The continued weather pattern, and the National Weather Service’s extension of the blizzard warning farther inland Friday morning has prompted the U.S. National Toboggan Championships Committee to adjust its plans for the weekend,” organizers said in a press release.

All activities set to take place at “Tobogganville” on Saturday have been scrapped. Events scheduled for Friday, including practice runs, will be held as long as weather permits, but will take place an hour earlier than originally announced.

On Sunday, racing will start at 8 a.m. with the two-person teams and three-person teams leading off. A single run for each team will determine which sleds advance to the afternoon finals. After a lunch break and memorial sled runs, finals will begin at 1 p.m.
