Winter BDN Maine Outdoors publication on stands

Last spring the Bangor Daily News rolled out a new product that we hoped outdoors enthusiasts would enjoy. We called it BDN Maine Outdoors, and filled the publication with stories about fishing, hiking, hunting and outdoor folks we thought you’d like to read about.

The Winter 2012 issue of BDN Maine Outdoors is on newsstands now.

We also tucked the quarterly newsletter of our anchor sponsor, the Sportsman’s Alliance of Maine, into the center of the full-color issue, which allowed SAM the opportunity to get their news out to its membership (and others) in a new way.

Feedback was positive, and since that March debut, we’ve continued to produce BDN Maine Outdoors quarterly, and have had the chance to tell some great stories and celebrate the things that make our state’s outdoor playground such a wonderful place to recreate.

Today I’m happy to announce that our Winter 2012 issue has hit newsstands across the state.

What will you find inside? Well, our cover story is on our own two-time Olympic gold medalist, snowboarder Seth Wescott. BDN outdoor reporter Aislinn Sarnacki sat down with him at his home mountain, Sugarloaf, and wrote a great feature on the personable star.

Sarnacki also headed southern Maine and interviewed a group of women who surf in the chilly ocean waters year-round.

We’ve also got a couple of humorous tales: I wrote a piece on some of pitfalls that can make ice fishing a frustrating activity; Our advertising staff editor Brian Swartz explores the age-old question: “Can couples who snowmobile together stay together after a sledding accident?”

But there’s more: You’ll meet legendary Maine guide Gil Gilpatrick; you’ll find out how to choose the proper snowshoes for you and your kids; you’ll find out about skating and dog-sledding.

And best of all: BDN Maine outdoors is free. Just stop by a participating local store and pick up your copy today. Or, if you prefer, you can access the stories online here.

And as always, if you have any ideas about stories for future issues of BDN Maine Outdoors, send them to me at jholyoke@bangordailynews.com, Aislinn Sarnacki at asarnacki@bangordailynews.com, or our boss, Aimee Thibodeau, at athibodeau@bangordailynews.com.
