Paper any-deer application deadline approaching

Deer hunters who apply for a state any-deer permit the old fashioned way — by filling out a paper form — are running out of time if they hope to have a shot at tagging a doe this fall.

According to the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife, the deadline for paper applications is July 27 for those who stop by its Augusta headquarters or send an application in the mail.

Those who fill out applications on the Internet still have a bit of time, however: Their deadline is 11:59 p.m. on Aug. 15.

The any-deer permit drawing will be held on Sept. 7. Entry in the drawing is free.

The state will hand out 34,160 any-deer permits — often called “doe permits” by hunters — and permits will be available in only 13 of the state’s Wildlife Management Districts where the deer population is faring well.

Those districts: 12, 13, 15, 16, 17, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 26 and 29.

This year’s Youth Deer Day is scheduled for Oct. 20. Residents-only day is Oct. 27. The regular firearms season on deer runs until Nov. 24.
