In yesterday’s Out There blog, I shared the results of the fifth annual Moosehead Lake Togue Derby.

Today, it’s time to turn our sights a little bit farther north, and recognize the winners of the seventh Long Lake Ice Fishing Derby.

First, a bit of clarification: Although officially named after the lake where some of the state’s largest landlocked salmon can be caught, this northern Maine event is truly regional. In fact, the 601 registered anglers were spread across seven Aroostook County lakes.

In addition to Long, anglers could fish Cross, St. Froid, Square, Eagle, Glazier and Beau lakes.

And as you might guess, when you unleash 601 avid ice anglers onto that many productive waters, the results are pretty impressive.

Here are the results, as reported by the derby committee:

Landlocked salmon, adult anglers: 1. ($1,500) Jason Castonguay, Wallagrass, 6 pounds, 9 ounces; 2. ($750) Jim Bouchard, 6 pounds, 1.4 ounces; 3. ($300) Tom Rouse, Amity, 5 pounds, 1 ounce; youth: 1. ($100, plus a $200 savings bond) Anthony Daigle, Madawaska, 5 pounds, 11.6 ounces; 2. Booby prize (most perch): 1. ($75) Justin Ouellette, Caribou, 254 perch.

According to derby chairman Paul Bernier, records were set for registrants, total sponsorship (more than $10,000), and donation to the Edgar J. Paradis Cancer Fund ($5,000).
